Thomas Hampson:
“Song is a metaphor of the imagination; it is poetic thought encapsulated in music. Poetry is driven by the basic instinct to tell the
story of existence and American poetry explores the cultural roots
of our nation.”

"Song of America" Wiki
Published: January 6, 2008
Our Song of America archive of 250 items to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the first song composed in America was always meant to involve diverse material and sources. The interest shown in Song of America by the musical and scholarly community has given us new hope for its broad-based and representative nature. It also gave us an idea of how to accomplish it. We've decided to employ a characteristically 21st-century, new-media approach to gathering a representative repertory: the wiki. We hope you will participate in the garnering in this harvest of song and that you will stay in touch with the Song of America during its entire length and breadth.
